Driving in the Middle Lane is Unnatural

Many motorists consider themselves to be environmentalists and yet insist on driving in the middle lane. In the UK I met people who were concerned about the possible extinction of animals like the red squirrel. In Australia I know those who protest about the widening of freeways into National parks. Yet they are all quite happy to cruise along the freeway hogging the middle lane. I have heard that motorists in US are just as bad (although I have not heard much concern for the environment). Why are these attitudes in conflict? Apart from just being bloody annoying to other motorists, driving in the middle lane causes congestion. The more congestion we have on the roads the more roads are built. The more roads constructed the less space there is for nature. So even if you have no consideration for other road users, for the sake of the environment keep left (right if you live in the US) unless overtaking.
